First Line: Go on, get out!

Great Line: No matter what kind of camping you do, it's all about connecting with nature.

One of My Favorite Sections: When I was small I loved to make maps and then have my brothers follow them to find treasure. Usually something to eat or money. So when I came to the section on reading maps, using a compass, making your own compass, marking trails  and reading natural direction decoders, I was really excited. (115)

What Others Are Saying: "I love this book! It is a great resource and has lots of different types of activities in one book (recipes, star gazing, animal tracks). I have used this book as a teacher, mom, camp director and a girl scout leader. The book is written for kids as the audience, but I also find my self using it. My children love to read it on their own and get ideas. It has a nice layout with interesting and helpful illustrations." —Artmom

"This is a really fun book! I haven't used it for an actual camping trip away from home yet, but I have used it for ideas when the kids and I camp in the back yard. It's got some great projects, like make your own compass and make your own birdfeeder, as well as several good recipes with instructions on what to prep at home. The kids love it whenever I pull this book out." —Staci McLaughlin

What I Thought: "Mom, sometimes I just don't know what to do with him," said my son about his five-year-old. So Grandma was on a mission to find something I knew my son would enjoy and something he could share with his little boy. Eureka! This is perfect. My son loves to camp and every year goes on a long 3-day hike with his buddies in the backwoods. This is the perfect thing for them to share together, chockfull of activities and information that will keep them busy, inside or out. I can't wait to give it to them for Christmas! Shhhh, don't tell.

Who: A four-time Emmy Award-winning writer for "Bill Nye the Science Guy," Lynn Brunelle has over 20 years experience writing for people of all ages, across all manner of media. Previously a classroom science, English and art teacher for kids K-12, an editor, illustrator, and award-winning author of over 45 titles, Lynn has created, developed and written projects for Chronicle, Workman, National Geographic, Scholastic, Random House, Penguin, A&E, The Discovery Channel, Disney, ABC TV, NPR, The Annenburg Foundation, World Almanac, Cranium and PBS.

Why: She has followed many passions over the years from Shakespearean director to biology, metalsmithing, archaeology, cooking, photography, travel, a brief excursion in juggling, teaching writing, illustrating and glass slumping. She learned the basics as a classroom teacher in a behavior problem classroom finding ways to reach kids who learned in an out-of-the-box fashion. From there she started writing for children while working as an editor at Scientific American Books for Young Readers (and later at Workman), where she identified a need for more fun and genuinely appealing science books for kids, and started writing them herself. “I want people to be using my books to learn for fun,” she has said. “I love the idea of igniting a passion in kids and adults.”
