MMGM Review: Troll Hunters by Michael Dahl

About The Book:  [E-book] Evil and danger rumbles under the earth. Follow the adventures of a group of contemporary teenagers who discover that their town, and ultimately the entire world, is under attack by fierce creatures from deep beneath the earth. These creatures were known to the earliest humans as trolls or goblins, but they are much more dangerous than their fairy-tale versions. The teens make unlikely allies along the way, including a half-man, half-troll, as well as some legendary constellations that quite literally come to life. The young heroes will also discover their own untapped celestial abilities in an epic battle between good versus evil.

First Line: County Road One ran east out of Zion Falls, snaked around the north edge of the ole, abandoned quarry, and then stretched east again in a straight line.

What Others Thought:  "Compulsive plot, non-stop action and the battle between modern-day good and ancient evil attract boys and girls alike, and the fast-moving narrative, lots of suspense and cumulating violence will keep them reading." —Kirkus Reviews

"Dahl fills this noisy middle-grade actioner with plenty of fun, if not always logical, ideas, roping in everything from Lovecraftian mythos to an explanation for the infamous word Croatoan. Kovar’s plentiful, dramatic illustrations are absolutely key in lending spectacle to action scenes that are otherwise a bit confusing."— Daniel Kraus in Booklist

What I Thought: This reminded me of those movies when the scene filled with chasing and banging and horrible clanging is about to end another one starts up. I tend to like my books a bit quieter and character driven. This is definitely plot driven and the tension is all about what is going to happen next. Which I have to admit would appeal to many middle grade readers, especially boys. There is rarely a moment to catch your breath before another scary situation begins.

  1. I have never heard of this book- but from what I read here it is sure to be a hit with MG boys (and girls). What a cover! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Nice! Love the cover, love the what you said about the book. Will be adding it to my to reads. Thanks, Pam!

And a tad green with envy that Michael's house is haunted!

  3. I love the fact that he lives in a haunted house. This book sounds like it's all action and would appeal to fans of Lightning Thief or other action-oriented books. Thanks for the heads-up, Pam.

I would love to hear from you!
