PNWA Conference Rocked!!

I had a weekend of firsts. Last Thursday-Sunday I attended the PNWA Writers Conference. It was fantabulous, superlicious and awesome!! It was my first, so I had some nerves but I don't think I was as nervous as Chuck Sambuchino said I was. (My hands always shake.) Here are just some of the highlights for me:

1. First you have to understand that I have a weakness for English accents, but Chris Humphreys theatrical voice was an awesome way to open the conference. What did he speak about? What else, WORDS. (OMG: His Shakespeare was intense.)

2. I'm actually more of a random-ADD-driven writer so if I can find someone that can boil down a topic and supply a handout, it keeps me grounded. Robert Dugoni was incredible. Both the seminar and his workshops were packed with information for a total brain explosion.

3. Meeting real agents and editors was an important part of my writing journey. They aren't nearly as scary as they are sometimes made out to be with all the lists of do's and don'ts flying around. They are real people, they eat, they work hard and believe it or not they sometimes even crack a smile. :)

4. Attending with my critique partner, Annie was awesome. We could split up and glean more information, cheer each other on during pitch sessions and best of all I always had someone to eat with. We both commuted everyday from the Tacoma area. #ttotalexhaustion Next year, we will be staying at the hotel. I need my afternoon power naps!

5. Who else attends writing conferences? Writers. We are a unique lot with the majority being introverts. It was priceless to feel part of such a talented group of people. They share my love of reading, writing and understand my obsession to have my words published. We're a quirky bunch all in different stages of writing but every writer I met was generous and friendly no matter where they were in the pursuit of publication. That validation is invaluable to people who spend the majority of their days isolated in front of a computer.

I could go on and on. These are only a few. I am grateful for PNWA and all the hard work that went into making this an incredible conference.

Take A Risk Tuesday: Pitch to an Agent at a Conference

This week I'm preparing for my first real writing conference. Besides looking forward to meeting fellow writers, I am also totally pumped for all the workshops. (If I could only split myself into multiple people and attend them all.) Luckily, for me, one of my critique partners is going to join me. Yea, Annie!!

There are a few things I'm sweating about, however. One of them is my scheduled pitch with an agent. Even though I've researched what she's looking for, wrote the best pitch I can, practiced it a hundred times, I'm still biting my nails. (What's left of them.) The other event that has me pacing a bit,  is the appointment with the book doctor. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally into hearing what others think will improve my work. It's those useless voices that love to rear their ugly heads and taunt me. Your plot is weak! Who do you think you're fooling? You're not a real writer...

So in spite of the unfriendly banter inside my head, I'm going. So there!

What's the next risk you're going to take?

Discovery Friday

Today I was thinking about all the cool things I have discovered through my reading, blogging and writing  this week and thought I would share them with you. Maybe you will find something useful that you can use...

Cool books:
XVI  by Julia Karr  Totally enjoying this and will review it in the near future. Suffice it to say it is awesome!

Hero by Mike Lupika  (I hope he has a sequel) MG  One of his best. A very fast ride!

Diary of a Bad Year by J.M. Coetzee A post modern divisive chapter structure that in the end delivers a coherent plot. Talk about writing outside of the box.

Cool Blogs:
The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment by Matthew Rush His posts are meaty writing and his blog is loaded with useful links!
A Torch in the Tempest by Christi Goddard Snarky writing with real literary pizazz!
A Writer of Wrongs by Terry Towry Terry unabashedly shares his conference experience in NY. Go Terry!
Writing YA in the Midwest by Julia Karr  Follow the journey of XVI and her other writing projects. Congrats Julia!

I Really Do Want To Do Some Things This Year...

OK, so after yesterday's post you probably all think I am the resolution/ goal scrooge. (You're probably right!) If you knew me 15 years ago you would understand.  I was a young mother with five children, trying to make a difficult marriage work, and an endless list of should and shouldn't do's.  So I'm a bit soured on the whole lets go conquer the world mentality.  Short story...life is way to hard without having people, God, or anybody looking over your shoulder and second guessing yourself.

That said, I do have several things I plan to add to my writing life.  They say if you share them with someone you're more inclined to actually make the changes. (Oh, here it comes...OMG... *stomach churns* could I be committing to something...no, no...just breathe.) I'm pretty new to this writing life, so be gentle.

Stuff That Would Be Really Cool In 2011... (OK,  so I like lots of sugar with my medicine.)

1) Complete rewrites on my middle school novel.
2) Join a writer's group.
2) Find some awesome beta readers to critique my work.
3) Attend my first writer's conference.
4) Start work on my next middle school novel.
5) Write 3-5 blog posts a week.
6) Work with reluctant readers and coach kid's writing.

What cool stuff do you want to do? Any suggestions on how I can succeed in having a cool 2011?
