MMGM NW Authors: Animals Welcome by Peg Kehret

About The Book: A moving memoir from an award-winning author.
A mother cat and her kittens, shot with a pellet gun. A poacher illegally stalking a bear. Peg Kehret tells these true stories and more as she invites readers into her life on a small wildlife sanctuary.
Vividly showing the joys of animal rescue while providing facts about the animals and birds she encounters, Kehret also shares the tragedy of her husband's sudden death, and the pain of losing Pete, the shelter cat who co-authored three of her books. Written with honesty, heart, and humor,Animals Welcome is a personal glimpse into the life of an author who loves animals, and the philosophy by which she lives. —Goodreads

First Line: Most of my books include an animal. I've written about elephants, bears, llamas, dogs, cats, chimpanzees, a rabbit, a pig, a 'possum, a horse, a pony, and a monkey.

What Others Are Saying: "Each chapter is a new adventure with a cat or dog that comes into Kehret’s life, and young readers who love animals will enjoy these chatty anecdotes."—Kirkus

"This book is a collection of heartwarming snapshots centered on animals from feral cats, black bears to peacocks. You just never know who is going to show up when the welcome mat is out and all animals are welcome."—Layla Morgan Wilde
What I Thought: This was a delightful read and would make a fun read-aloud for children. I was amazed at the adventures that the author has had with all kinds of animals. Her writing is clear and concise and her story telling is exceptional. My favorite was sad but so full of hope and promise that I found it inspiring. In the chapter entitled  "My Life Changed Forever," Kehret relates the loss of her husband Carl and how she found purpose and joy once again through her first foster cat. "I still miss Carl and always will, but his workshop is no longer a sad, empty space,"writes Kehret about the workshop turned—Home For Wayward Cats...Strays Welcome!

Who: Peg Kehret has always loved to write. As a child, she wanted to be either a writer or a veterinarian; now she includes animals in most of her books. She grew up in Austin, Minnesota, and had a happy and normal childhood except for a bout with polio which paralyzed her from the neck down and hospitalized her for nine months. However, she made nearly a complete recovery. She graduated from Austin High School and attended the University of Minnesota for one year.
She married Carl Kehret in 1955, and moved to California two years later. They adopted two children, Bob and Anne. As a young mother, Peg completed one more year of college. In 1970, Peg and Carl moved to Washington State where she still lives.

What: Kehret has published 47 books, the majority being children's books. She has won awards in just about every state. Here are just a few:

Later this week join me for an interview with NW author Katherine Schlick Noe author of Something To Hold. The book is based on her own experiences on an Indian Reservation in Oregon. Read the review, here.

MMGM: The Fast And The Furriest by Andy Behrens

About The Book: Meet Kevin Pugh, 12-year-old couch potato. Now meet Cromwell, his part beagle, part potato chip dog. Kevin’s looking forward to spending his summer doing as little as possible. Unfortunately, Kevin’s father, former Chicago Bears star player/super-sports fanatic, Howie Pugh, feels differently. So does Cromwell, who has suddenly and mysteriously developed a fascination with agility competitions: running up seesaws, leaping over hurdles, soaring through hoops (sometimes). If he has to do anything, Kevin would rather do something for newly obsessed Cromwell, but dog agility lessons do not constitute a sport in his father’s mind, so football camp it is. Until some well-timed events collide, literally, and soon Kevin’s found a way for he and Cromwell to take classes, and the upstart Team Cromwell is born.

First Line: Twelve-year-old Kevin Pugh stood on the pitcher's mound.

What Others Are Saying: "In spite of a clichéd plot and caricaturelike secondary characters, Behrens's engaging style will appeal to children. Students will relate to likable Kevin's self-deprecating humor, and Cromwell's perseverance gives anyone with an unrealized dream a glimmer of hope."—Kim Dare on School Library Journal

"This semi-sports story reads like a Cinderella tale in which the protagonist rises above his own apathy, rather than nasty relatives, to achieve hero status. Secondary characters, such as Elka, the eccentric trainer at the dog school, and Kevin’s best friend, Zach, who has grand visions of sponsorship deals for Cromwell, are effective foils. Plot surprises are few, but the abundant humor makes this a satisfying underdog story in the tradition of Gordon Korman’s and David Lubar’s novels." —Kara Dean on Booklist

What I Thought: This was a fun quick read, perfect for the hard-to-please reluctant reader. The action is fast paced and there are some very funny scenes. I was a little disappointed with many of the  secondary characters. The Dad was just caricature. This is a good choice for  8-9 year old boys, older readers may find the plot fairly predictable. I liked the way Kevin finds something he enjoys that is physical and gets him off the couch. The dialogue is lively and Cromwell is incredibly lovable.

Check out this great agility video to get an idea of what Kevin and Cromwell were up to.

Bloggers Uniting To Promote Dog Rescue!

Today I'm taking a break from MMGM to talk to you about the plight of abandoned and abused animals. When I was researching for my book Madison Morgan:When Dogs Blog I became painfully aware this problem. So today I wanted to write about some of the things that I've learned.

“His name is not wild dog anymore, but the first friend, because he will be our friend for always and always and always.” --Rudyard Kipling

1. Shelters are overcrowded. There are 80 million dogs owned in the U.S. alone.

2. Dogs end up in shelters because pet owners don't realize how much responsibility caring for a pet can be.

3. While there are plenty of cases of blatant pet abuse, many times animals suffer because owners either don't understand what's required or don't have the resources to properly care for a pet.

4. Once the puppy becomes a dog, pet owners get frustrated because they don't know how to train their dogs.

5. There are still puppy mills operating around the U.S. and they are now advertising online.

6. Puppy mills are places where dogs are crammed into small cages, forced to have litter after litter and then are thrown away like an old pair of shoes.

These are just a few of the issues. I believe it is our responsibility to care for the animals in our world.

How Many Surf Dogs Can You Count On This Surfboard?

Dale Porter (KillerImage) ranks as one of the best action photographers in my opinion. Here are a couple of his photos taken today in Del Mar dog beach during the So Cal Surf Dogs practice session with famous surfer Scott Chandler. We are attempting to set a world record by having the highest number of dogs sharing one giant surfboard.

Towel Wrap Your Cat in 5 Easy Scratch-Free Steps
Here’s Arden Moore’s latest post on Vetstreet.com — be sure to visit Vetstreet for other tips and pet stories.
When you need to trim your feline’s nails or give her medication, there’s a common household item that can make the procedure go much more smoothly — a large bath towel.
“Wrapping your cat in a towel is a great way to protect yourself from claws,” says Dr. Sophia Yin, a veterinarian and applied animal behaviorist. “Towel wrapping also prevents escapes, and helps calm down a cat.”
Toweling can also benefit cats who tend to be anxious, fearful or aggressive when handled, adds Dr. Yin, author of Low Stress: Handling, Restraint and Behavior Modifications of Dogs and Cats.
“Cats can be more difficult than dogs to restrain for several reasons,” says Dr. Yin. “In general, cats receive less socialization and handling than dogs, and their evolutionary history as a prey species can also cause them to feel more vulnerable when restrained. And cats can easily reach around to grab, bite or scratch you.”

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY:
DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.

DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer.." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time....

Furry Friday: Happy Easter!

wondercomments.com

Spring is an awesome time of year to think about relationships. Mark Nepo, an inspiring poet and philosopher, wrote a piece that I found inspiring and relates not only to our relationships with our families but with all living things.   Enjoy!

“There’s a story about a woman who on her way to Chimayo saw two Spanish farmers repositioning stones in a riverbed to redirect the flow; she felt compelled to help. She had the feeling that this had been done for centuries—their mothers and fathers, their grandmothers and grandfathers, each in their own time and way, picking up the same stones pushed about by the storm or drought and putting them back so the water can continue.

It seems this is the never-ending work of relationship, each of us in our own time and way moving the stones between us, repositioning the heavy things that get in the way, so the life of feeling can continue.

“The weather of simply living jams things up, and we, like every generation before us, must roll up our pants and sleeves, step into the river, and unclog the flow. Of course, we need to ask, What are the stones pushed about between us? What are the heavy things that keep getting in the way?

“No doubt, they are infinite and particular, but often, they are made up of habits of not: not seeing, not hearing, not feeling, not being present, not risking the truth, not risking the hearts need to live out in the open.

“That we close off, jam up, spill over, and dry up are all part of being human in gravity of time. That we feel compelled to stop and help even strangers move the heavy thing out of the way is an impulse known as love.”
                                                                                                              —Mark Nepo

Exciting News You Don't Want To Miss! No April Fools Here

Thats right! This is the real thing.
 Announcing:Project Madison
My granddaughter Kayla and her dog Belle!
Did you know...

  • There are 78.2 million owned dogs in the U.S.
  • 39% of U.S. households own at least one dog.

but did you know this sad statistic?

  • Ten million animals are euthanized in shelters each year.

There are many no-kill shelters that are struggling to stay open. The costs to keep and care for unwanted animals is huge. Food, shelter, healthcare and training all put a substantial drain on rescue facilities that depend on donations.
There are many things that people can do to help. Project Madison is an effort to make a difference.
How?
Meet Madison Morgan, a spunky eleven-year-old, who learns she has a special gift that leads her to make a daring animal rescue.

This summer her adventures will be published in my MG novel which, in turn I hope will create awareness and financial support for participating shelters and rescue operations.

Stay tuned for more details. Be sure to check the Project Madison tab for updates and important information about how you can get involved.

Five Things You Need To Know

St.Patricks Day Parade in Dungarvan Co.Waterford
By SeanByrne
Happy St. Patricks Day!
I'm on hiatus from social media but there are five things you need to know so you won't wander too far...

1. On March 26th I'm reviewing Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu.
And then on March 28th author Carol Fisher Saller will be with us to talk about her book Eddie's War reviewed on the blog here.

2. Beginning in April I will be exploring Indie publishing and Traditional publishing from a more media savvy prospective. There are a lot of myths, contradictory and often adversarial information out there. With your help, I'm hoping to open a dialogue about publishing from the readers point of view. Isn't this the view that's the most important?

3. While on hiatus I am also researching social media and making decisions about which ones will work best for me. I plan on sharing what I've learned in a new series I call, Joining The Online Dialogue: Why Writers Can't Be Shy Anymore.

4. The new Furry Friday will open it's first call for photo's so get ready to send in your favorite pet shots along with a caption for the There Can Be Only One Contest.

5. And finally...I will be making an exciting announcement on April 1st and it's no April Fool. Trust me...it's so real I already have goosebumps.

So in the meantime... check out my sidebar for the awesome MMGM reviews every Monday. Or check out my list of most popular posts here on the blog, in case you missed them before.
